Tulsi, also known as holy basil (Ocimum sanctum), is valued for its beneficial use in hair and skin care. It is believed to have soothing, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is added to cosmetic preparations to help provide hair with adequate moisture, leaving it soft and smooth and helping to reduce frizz. It is also traditionally associated with deep cleansing, care for oily scalp and hair prone to excessive shedding.

It may also be suitable for the care of dandruff-prone scalp and blemish-prone skin.

Certifications

ECOCERT

ECOCERT is a French certification organisation for organic products, operating since 1991. Although it originally focused on promoting organic agriculture, over time it expanded its certification activities to include cosmetics, household cleaning products and textiles.

To receive ECOCERT certification, a cosmetic product must meet strict requirements, including:

• at least 95% of its plant-based ingredients must come from organic farming,
• at least 10% of the total ingredients must be certified organic,
• the ingredients and finished product must not be contaminated, exposed to harmful radiation, contain nitrosamines, be genetically modified or tested on animals,
• packaging must be biodegradable or recyclable,
• the manufacturing process must be transparent and environmentally responsible,
• the company must manage waste and energy consumption in an environmentally responsible manner.

As this Indus Valley product consists entirely of certified herbs from organic cultivation, it has been awarded ECOCERT certification.

USDA Organic

USDA, the United States Department of Agriculture, certifies organic farming based on a range of criteria, including:

• methods used for planting and sowing crops,
• soil fertilisation methods,
• methods used to manage pests, fungi, diseases and weeds,
• cultivation techniques,
• materials used during production.

This organic Indus Valley product meets the criteria specified by the United States Department of Agriculture and has therefore received USDA Organic certification.

Directions for Use

For the skin: mix the powder with water or milk to create a thick paste. Apply for 10–15 minutes, then rinse off thoroughly.

For the hair: mix the powder with water to make a paste. Gently massage it into the scalp and distribute through the hair. Leave on for approximately 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

Safety and Storage

Before applying the product to larger areas of the body, perform a patch test: mix a small amount of powder with water, apply it to a small area of skin, allow the mixture to dry and then rinse off. If no adverse reaction occurs, the product may be used as directed.

Suitable for persons over 12 years of age. Do not use around the eyes or on broken skin. Store in a cool, dry place and keep out of reach of children.
